Jeet Kune Do or "The Way of the Intercepting Fist" is the self defense philosophy that was created by the legendary Bruce Lee himself. Way before mixed martial arts, traditional martial arts styles had many strict rules and traditions that could not be broken. Lee felt that many martial artists became obsessed with the techniques of their chosen style, and that the “system” became more important than the practitioner himself. He thought that this was ridiculous, and referred to it as “the Classical Mess”.
Bruce Lee considered traditional form-based martial arts to be restrictive and ineffective in a real world combat situation which was unpredictable, fluid and had no rules. It was this predicament and impracticality that gave birth to Jeet Kune Do, which is a combination of concepts from various martial arts and other self defense systems. Borrowing styles from boxing, traditional Kung Fu, Kali and even European Fencing, Jeet Kune Do was born and is considered by many experts to be the Grandfather of today's Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). And now, you have the opportunity to learn this legendary system in Malaysia at Lil' Ninjas Dojo.
Jeet Kune Do (JKD) has heavy emphasis on "combat realism" and insists that martial arts techniques should be incorporated based upon their effectiveness in real combat situations. This is the key difference between Jeet Kune Do and others that were more "flowery" and "looked good" but was often not practical or would prove to be ineffective in real street survival and self-defense situations. This is also the same premise that would differentiate JKD from other "sport"-oriented martial arts systems that were geared towards "tournament" or "point systems". Bruce Lee felt that these systems were "artificial" because these systems incorporated too many rules, which would ultimately handicap a practitioner in a real self-defense situation.
Some of the key principles in Jeet Kune Do that make it street worthy in real life are:-

Footwork
As you have seen in many Bruce Lee films, he is always agile an has a nimble skipping like footwork in his fight scenes. This technique was mainly adopted from Muhammad Alí's footwork in boxing and this allowed a fighter to maneuver their way around and away from an enemy's strikes.

Economy of Motion
In short, JKD Practitioners aim for 3 main things when striking:-
-
Efficiency: A strike or attack that reaches its target in the least time, with maximum force
-
Directness: Doing what comes naturally in a disciplined way
-
Simplicity: No flowery techniques. Just straight and direct in an uncomplicated manner; without ornamentation
Maximized force is to end the battle quickly due to the amount of damage inflicted upon an opponent. Rapidity aims to reach the target before the opponent can react, which is half-beat faster timing, as taught in Wing Chun and Western boxing.

Stop Hits
When an opponent prepares to attack, they need to move towards you to close the distance and reach you. This offers you an opportunity to intercept your opponent's attack with an attack of your own, rather than just blocking. This is the concept that gave Jeet Kune Do its name. This is also one of the most difficult skills to develop in JKD and this strategy borrows from Wing Chun as well as some components of European Fencing.

Simultaneous Parrying and Attack
Rather than just blocking or deflecting your opponents when they strike you, JKD emphasizes in doing blocking and attacking at the same time. Simultaneously parrying and punching utilizes the principles of economy of motion by effectively combining attack and defense into a single movement, that minimizes the "time" element and maximizes the "energy" element. In Krav Maga, his is also knows as Bursting

Low Kicks
JKD focuses a lot on lower kicks to the knees, thigh, shin and mid section for many reasons. These targets are the closest to the feet hence making it easier and faster to reach, provides more stability for you when you strike and is more difficult for your opponent to defend or block against.
